At Elm Tree Primary School, our history curriculum inspires children to be curious about the past and develop an understanding of how people, events and societies have shaped the world we live in today. Through engaging enquiries, children explore significant events, individuals and periods of history while developing their skills as young historians.

Learning is enriched through the use of historical artefacts, photographs and other visual sources, drama and role play, educational visits, visitors and immersive experiences that bring history to life. Oracy is an important part of our curriculum, with children regularly participating in discussions, debates and reflection activities to share ideas, justify opinions and deepen their understanding.

We encourage pupils to make meaningful connections between new learning and their prior knowledge, helping them to build a secure understanding of chronology, cause and consequence, change and continuity, and historical significance. Children record their learning in a variety of ways, demonstrating their understanding through writing, discussion, presentations, creative outcomes and practical activities. Through these experiences, pupils develop a lasting appreciation of history and an understanding of its relevance to the present day.
