At Elm Tree Primary School, we believe in teaching artistic knowledge and skills explicitly so that children can apply them creatively across the curriculum through projects, challenges and whole-school art experiences.

Using the CUSP curriculum, we provide a high-quality, ambitious and progressive Art and Design curriculum that develops creativity, confidence and technical skills. Children explore a wide range of materials, media and techniques while building their understanding of the key elements of art, including line, shape, colour, texture, form, value and space.

From Year 1, every child has a sketchbook that follows them through school, allowing them to develop ideas, practise skills, reflect on their learning and revisit prior knowledge.

Oracy, reflection and artistic vocabulary are central to our curriculum. Children learn to discuss, evaluate and communicate their ideas confidently while responding thoughtfully to their own work and the work of others.

Our aim is for all children to develop a love of art and creativity, becoming confident, reflective and skilled artists who can work independently and collaboratively.
